Safest and Easiest Way to Clean Silver Jewelry

February 17, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Silver Articles

Recently my sister-in-law’s grandmother passed away and she was left with a rather large collection of antique silver jewelry. The collection included a number of different pieces that were considerably tarnished and while some were enhanced by the presence of the tarnish some needed to have it removed in order to shine up to their full potential.

The pieces that were enhanced by the tarnish were those that had intricate engravings and etchings on them. These pieces needed only a quick polish to shine them up in order to look beautiful but the others needed something a little stronger to do the job. So my sister-in-law searched the internet for products that would take away the tarnish on those silver pieces that she wished to have it removed and she found a number of different websites offering these products when she searched Google.

Evidently a number of companies make these such products. Some of these products are Tarn-X, Silver Lightning, and Metallux. All of these products are said to work very well on silver and are fairly inexpensive as well but they all also contain harsh chemicals that for one may irritate your skin and second of all are dangerous to have in the house if there are children living there. And although my sister-in-law didn’t have a child at the time she was expecting which was also another reason to not use harsh chemical in and of itself, so she decided to look into alternative ways to get rid of the tarnish marring up certain pieces of her collection.

So, we went back to Google and we did another search but this time for homemade tarnish removers for silver jewelry. We found a number of helpful sites that detailed exactly how to make homemade silver jewelry cleaners that were safe and lacking harsh chemicals but yet still would work good enough to remove the tarnish. These homemade cleaners may contain things such as salt, soap, baking soda, and/or water. As you can see none of these materials are at all threatening or dangerous and they work well too.

For one particular homemade cleaner you will need salt, baking soda, water, aluminum foil, soap, and a glass pan big enough to hold these materials plus your jewelry or other silver pieces that you are cleaning. First you will want to cover the bottom of the glass pan with the aluminum foil in order to prevent the bottom of the pan from darkening. After you do this you will boil a solution made up of one quart of water, one tablespoon of baking soda, along with one teaspoon of salt. While you are in the process of boiling the solution you may place your silver in the pan on top of the aluminum foil. After the solution is boiled pour it over the silver and let it sit for five minutes before washing it with warm, soapy water and let dry.

This is a safe and easy way to clean silver jewelry and low cost as well.

Craft fairs and outdoor festivals — generally in the summer time. You can usually get a table at these events for $20-$50 for the day. You will want to have a good selection of inventory; if you do you can usually gross anywhere between $150-$400 (based on my experience). If you have. Your sales will be directly related to your quantity of inventory.Winter bazaars, church sales, holiday festivals — Oct-December. Check the local paper. Many churches have these annual events and tables are pretty inexpensive. These events are nice because people come to spend $ on gifts. Home-based jewelry parties. You can host an event yourself, or have a friend host it and give her some free stuff as compensation. I like to have a good friend or relative host – that way I am pretty sure they will follow through. Ask your friend to invite her friends, relatives, etc. for the party. You provide some light snacks and bring all your stuff. Again, people come to buy and you have no competition! If you get people to one of these you will make out pretty well, and you don’t need to have as large a selection. I have made up to $1500 in an hour and half! Typically, I’d gross $300-$500 in a pretty short time.Flea markets– usually in summer and holiday season. These can be boom or bust. It depends on whether, traffic, etc. Generally people at these want to spend very little, so the low-end stuff sells best. Good place to experiment since the tables are usually only $20 or so. I know people that go to the same flea markets every week and do very well with lots of repeat customers.Store/ mall-cart. This is a much bigger leap since the overhead is so high compared to the above venues. I have done neither so cannot offer any good advice in except to plan really well and consider all the costs involved. 3. Where will you get your inventory? This is the place you will need the best research. Unless you are selling in large volume, you will probably want to get a markup of about 2.5 to 3 times (what you paid for inventory). The lower the price you pay for your goods, the lower the price you can offer your customers/ the more profit you will make. You will always save more when you buy in bulk, so look for a supplier you can form a long-term relationship with who can give you good deals, service and selection. Buying a large quantity now may seem like a big expense now, but the result is you make more profit on every single item you sell.The more you spend the more you save. Find a few good suppliers and see what sells well and who is willing to work with you. Find suppliers who provide good service and are committed to your success. Buy off ebay- many people buy stuff at good prices then just re-sell

Search the web for other silver jewelry wholesalers.Buy from me! I have a wholesale silver jewelry website with very good deals and always have closeout lots. Once in a while someone calls wanting to ‘haggle’. Well, call me old-fashioned, but I like to be straight-up and help everyone, especially the little guy. I offer the same low price for a $75 order as I do for a $1000 order. Check around and you will see that our prices are very low, value is very high and there are few wholesalers who offer no-hassle pricing and ordering as this site does. Our best sellers are our Amber Silver Jewelry and Wholesale Silver Earrings

Search the web for manufacturers. Most are in Asia. And you will get the best deals this way – but you are going to have to spend $3000+ to get the best prices and give yourself 6 months to find the right vendors, get your inventory and develop a relationship. It seems simple, but trust me, the cultural differences alone will add 3 months to the process! Unless you need 20+ designs of each design you order, or actually want to get a mixed batch of random left-over that you will not see in advance, this is not a great option for most small businesses.4. Is an online business right for you? … or … I make a living through my website. My business is successful because I:

Have an efficient system to manage business operationsProvide excellent service

Have several great, inexpensive source for products – suppliers that I know well and trust 100%

Purchase a high volume of jewelry each month (enabling lower margin on each item)

Spent time researching/ testing products and marketing strategies and learning about ecommerce

As I said, everyone’s situation may be different, but this is what works for me. I started about 6+ years ago part time, and within about 6 months had a full time internet business. I never expected it to work out this way, but it’s still going strong. Now it is much easier to get started from the technical side — the major auction sites offer good services for beginners and there are products out there to manage your business. You can even start a fully-functional ecommerce website without knowing any html! See links below for details. It is the “systems” that are the key factor for me. I have a system for inventory, a system to communicate with customers and a system to manage the fulfillment and customer service process. Most of my systems are computerized but I always take the time to get to know my customers in person when I have the opportunity.5. … Is an offline business right for you?Many folks are intimated at first by the whole ecommerce thing. The truth is an off-line business can be just as successful. Unless you have a lot of capital you want to start off (and continue!) with low overhead. So, you don’t need to go out and buy a store front! You can start by buying a small amount of inventory and testing the waters. Try selling to friends and co-workers

Host a jewelry party (or better – have a friend host it) and invite a lot of people. I once made $1500 in an hour an a half! Typically, I would make about $400 or so in a couple hours.

Rent a table at a craft show (summer fair or church bazaar around holiday time). Tables are usually only $20-$40 for the day. Get a spot a flea market

Put stuff out at your or your friends garage sales. It really works!My advice is until you really know your market and have a handle on your revenue stream, start small. This way you are not going to lose much, if any, money.6. Business licenses, TaxID numbers, merchant accounts, etc.Check with your state to see what is required to do business. My experience is that it is very simple. You can get a TaxID, which takes about 1 hour and you can do it by phone, and this enables you to buy inventory without paying sales tax. But keep in mind that most vendors will be out of your state and wiill probably not charge sales tax anyway. In this case most vendors may not even need a TaxID. In terms of taxes, you can file under your TaxID or your social security number. If using your social security number and keeping the business under your own name, I do not THINK you need a TaxID, as long as you claim all your income appropriately. If you plan to have a business checking account you will need a TaxID number. As far as I know you do not need any special license to sell retail. But you should contact your state tax office to get all the paperwork you will need to remit sales tax to the state. You are required to collect sales tax on retail purchases (most internet companies only charge sales tax to customers that live in the same state as the business). And at the end of the year, you have to pay this tax to the state.As your business grows, its a good idea to take credit cards, especially for online businesses. Nowadays this is pretty easy. I get about 20 offers a day via email to setup merchant accounts and accept credit cards online. Do a search on google.com and you will find hundreds of places to do this for you! The cost is about $25/ month + $200-$300 setup fee. Another option is to use only a PayPal account. The account is free to setup. Get a paypal account regardless of what you do because its essential!! I’d say 50% or more of online shoppers now, and 80% of ebay customers have paypal accounts. * I am NOT an accountant! This information is just based on my experience and may not be accurate. 7. Why am I telling you all this?

I could have used the advice when I got started! There is also plenty of market-share out there to share and I enjoy helping people get started in their own businesses. My other selfish motive is that since I am a wholesaler, it is in my best interest to help my customers succeed and would be happy to provide you with the inventory for your business. Even though my business has grown substantially since I started out, I still feel truly grateful to every one of my customers who enable me to succeed and allow me to pursue the lifestyle I choose. I am not interested in making a quick buck and I often tell people if I think there needs do not match with what I can provide – I only want to sell to people if I can help them be successful. I have shopped around a lot and will tell you that the products I carry are absolutely the nicest you will find in their price-points. And short of going to Bali or Kathmandu yourself I can provide you the lowest prices. In fact, I am so confident in my products and level of service that I provide a list of my competitors – other wholesale silver jewelry suppliers to make it easy for you to comparison-shop. If you find something better suited for your needs elsewhere, I truly wish you success.8. These are the sites that I use frequently These are all sites that I use everyday!DO IT!Once you have a solid plan, don’t stuff it in a drawer, take action! Start with the easy steps like identifying your suppliers, finding venues to sell your jewelry and designing your presentation. Also, don’t be hesitant some of your insightful friends or family know what you are doing. Some will have very helpful ideas… and of course others should be avoided! So get out there and start selling.EVALUATE AND ADJUST Business is an iterative process. After every new idea you try – whether its a new way of selling the jewelry or an ad in the local paper, evaluate the results. Keep in mind some things take time to yield results – such as advertising. So be patient. Adjust your selling techniques, marketing strategies and product lines until you find the mix that works for you.RE_INVEST AND SCALE UP

If you are like me you will have the desire to grow your business. After 3-6 months, if you are turning a profit, identify the steps you need to take to ramp-up your business. Resist the urge to stuff all your profits back into your pocket! Have confidence in yourself and know that the more you invest in the business the more you will achieve. Consider your inventory, equipment and knowledge an investment that will yield dividends. The bottom line I have discovered by experience is that the more inventory you carry the more you will sell. The more you invest in marketing, once you find the right niche, the more sales you will generate. And all these factors increase the value of your business.

Special Gift of Sterling Silver Jewelry

February 17, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Silver Articles

Silver is a beautiful alternative to its more expensive counterpart white gold but it must be remembered that it also requires considerably more care than white gold as well. Silver tends to tarnish after having it for a very long time, although certain pieces do look quite beautiful with the tarnish on it. I received an antique piece as a gift that is silver and turquoise and its quite tarnished but it is a beautiful piece. It almost appears as if it is a mix of silver and gold because of the tarnish which gives it a really original and aged look.

Many times you can polish your silver after it tarnishes and it will look much better but if you really want to completely remove the tarnish you can also purchase products made specifically for that reason. Some of these products include Silver Lighting and Tarn-X. Both of these products are said to completely remove tarnish from silver jewelry and any other silver you may be looking to clean up.

If you do somewhat like the tarnished look then you may want to look for pieces that have a lot of detail and/or etchings and such in them. These areas on the silver pieces will be the first to tarnish which will add depth and a considerable amount of otherwise missing character to the piece. What happens to these pieces that have these intricate patterns is the etchings in them turn a dark, almost black color that looks quite interesting compared to the brightness of the silver. This makes the piece of jewelry look much more original than it otherwise would.

Another thing to remember when it comes to buying silver jewelry is that because of the varying look silver can have due to things such as the tarnish and etchings or engravings it can sometimes be easy to mistake lower quality silver or even fake silver for high quality sterling or alloy silver. If you end up with fake silver you will find that it will leave green marks on your skin when its worn to long. This could end up being quite embarrassing if you buy a fake piece for a gift for someone so its wise to look into how to tell the difference between fake and real silver.

So, when you get ready to do your holiday shopping this year and you decide that you want to purchase jewelry for that special person on your gift list be sure to keep in mind both the benefits and the drawbacks (as few as there may be) of buying silver verses gold, or white gold. On one hand silver is much more inexpensive than either of the other precious metals often used for jewelry but on the other hand it also takes a little more care than either gold or white gold. Also remember that when buying silver it is easier to pass a fake off as real than it is when buying gold.

If you keep these things in mind you will be sure to give an extra special gift to someone on your list this year.

Sterling Silver Jewelry – Keep The Gleam!

February 17, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Silver Articles

We love our jewelry, and want it to last as long as possible. At Gonna Luv It, we get questions all the time from people who want to know how to care for sterling silver jewelry. Use these tips to keep your jewelry beautiful.

Keep your sterling silver away from toiletries. Lotions, perfumes, hairsprays, and more can coat your silver with a sticky residue that is very difficult to remove. We suggest that you think of your jewelry as a crowning touch. Don’t put it on until you have finished putting on your other beauty products. At the end of the day, take it off before you bathe. This will protect your fine jewelry from becoming dull and unattractive.

Household chores can cause small scratches in the finish, and harsh chemicals can damage your jewelry. This is a great reason to stop doing housework! If this excuse doesn’t work in your household, make sure that you remove your precious jewelry before tackling tough cleaning chores. And avoid chlorine bleach – it can damage the finish, weaken clasps, and loosen jeweler’s cement. Gardening can also cause significant damage to your jewelry. Wear gloves, or take your jewelry off before working on tough tasks.

Protect your jewelry from extreme heat or cold. Both temperature extremes can cause damage. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause damage to pearls and some gemstones, while the heat can melt jewelers cement, loosening your stones. Severe cold can actually cause fractures in certain gemstones!

Store your jewelry carefully. A jewelry box is a great choice, providing it has enough compartments for all your pieces. Each item should be kept in its own compartment. When metal rubs against other metal, or against gemstones, small scratches can result. This will destroy the luster of your sterling silver jewelry. Isolating each piece also prevents tangling. There’s nothing worse than seeking a necklace, and coming out with a tangled knot of metal and gemstones!

To keep your sterling silver looking its best, we recommend that you clean it. Over time, tarnish will build up. This affects the look of your piece, reducing its shine and adding a yellowish hue. Our article on How to Clean Sterling Silver can help you restore that bright shine, safely and effectively.

How to Create Your Own Sterling Silver Jewelry

February 17, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Silver Articles

It is interesting to note that people from all walks of life are choosing to opt for professions which are close to their heart. If we talk of sterling silver jewelry, we would imagine an elegant piece of necklace or a stylish bracelet which is sold through a normal shop and is available for purchase at a fixed price. This is a normal scenario wherein you happen to be a prospective buyer and the sterling silver jewelry is your prospective purchase. Let’s try and do a role reversal. Let us see what happens then.

Visit various shops and known jewelry stores

The visits need to be regular so that you are in constant touch with the various designs and styles. Once you have gained familiarity, it is time for you to take the plunge and discover the artist within you. Sterling silver jewelry has a lot of potential if it is tapped by the right person. Visit sales and unknown shops

At times, it helps to visit those shops which have not been frequented by normal shoppers. You can recognize these shops from far as they appear small and shabby and are located well away from the main marketplace. Here you would be surprised to find a wide variety of sterling silver jewelry and some designs which have been long forgotten. You can also try your hands at the local garage sales, yard sales, church auctions and various other stores. An authentic dealer of antique jewelry is also a reliable source to get you the designs which can never be found elsewhere.

Collect bits and piece and put them together

Sterling silver jewelry is not a single entity and is diversified into various sections. So, while visiting a particular showroom or an antique jewelry shop, you discover a unique necklace or a stylish bracelet- feel free to pick it up. Guide To Shopping For Sterling Silver Jewelry Online

February 17, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Silver Articles

If you’re shopping for sterling silver jewelry via the world wide web, it’s important to know some essential terms that can help you to easily identify and choose the pieces that you wish to add to your collection.

Sterling silver is a precious metal, which means that it is measured by the troy ounce weight system. It is said that approximately 31.1 grams of sterling silver equal one troy ounce. Many jewelry experts agree that any piece of jewelry that weighs at least one gram per inch is a bold design, which means a 7″ bracelet with 7 grams of silver would be considered a substantial presence. Additionally, an 18″ necklace with 18 grams of sterling silver would also be recognized as a bold find.

When shopping online, you may find width measurements noted in either inches or millimeters. It’s important to understand the two and how they translate in order to make sure you are getting the perfect piece of jewelry. A 1/4″ bracelet or necklace may be listed as 6mm, while a 1/2″ design may be noted as 12mm. A 3/4″ style equals 18mm, while a 1″ width may also be described as 24mm wide. It helps if you have a ruler that gives measurements in both inches and millimeters, which will help you to instantly visualize the width of an item as you shop online.

Sterling silver jewelry is hallmarked with a marking of .925. This number symbolizes the content of sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of another metal, which is typically copper or other alloy as allowed. The hallmark is typically found on the inside band of a ring or on the clasp of a necklace. Earrings are typically hallmarked on the butterfly back or on any surface that can accommodate the identifying mark.

If you are already a lover of sterling silver, then you have probably come to recognize the affordable nature and intricate jewelry designs available for purchase. If you are a beginning collector or are simply looking to build an impressive jewelry wardrobe without spending a fortune, sterling silver jewelry may be your answer. Because it is less expensive than gold, wearers can enjoy a bold presence at a fraction of the cost. Whether you are in the market for a simulated diamond, other gemstone recreation or you prefer genuine gems, you will find it all in sterling silver. If you are searching for a clean look that offers nothing more than a fantastic all-metal design, you will find an equally impressive product line in this popular and precious metal.

As a final thought to shopping for sterling silver jewelry online, always keep in mind that buying a product sight unseen means that you are trusting the retailer to give a complete and truthful description of the product being offered. As such, you should always shop with a reputable company who stands behind their product and their service. Sterling silver jewelry is a beautiful way to showcase your good taste, and you will take even greater pride in knowing that you got a great deal from a deserving retailer who appreciates your business.

Sterling Silver Jewelry Maintenance and Care – How to Clean your Sterling Silver Jewelry to Keep it Shiny and Lusterous

February 17, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Silver Articles

Cleaning new sterling silver jewelry has sometimes The first important step for keeping silver jewelry bright is preventing the tarnish in the first place. While rarely discussed, learning how to prevent tarnish will save hours of cleaning time later on. You should remove all sterling silver jewelry when applying perfumes, hair spray, lotions, and similar items. Try to avoid staining your jewelry with make-up, foods, and drink. If you do stain your jewelry with the above, rinse immediately with water and soap (mild, phosphate free preferably). Avoid strong chemicals, such as those found in hair coloring and dyes; these can tarnish silver instantly. Removing your jewelry when you bath or swim may or may not be necessary; just rinse with soap and water afterwards to clean off any residual chemicals.

The most common cleaning method for sterling silver jewelry is to use a soft polishing cloth on pieces you frequently wear. This helps remove any dirt or oils that may get on your jewelry through contact with skin and the environment. A soft non-abrasive cloth will work, or visit a jewelry store to purchase chemically treated polishing clothes especially designed for jewelry polishing. The frequency of such cleanings will vary with each person, but the hard and fast rule is to wipe the piece anytime you feel the shine is looking dull or before you store the piece away for an extended period.

Silver jewelry that won’t be worn for a while must be sealed in a plastic or cloth bag to minimize exposure to oxygen, humidity, and damage.

For a more thorough cleaning, detergents can be used. One method is to place a few pinches of baking soda or other mild non-phosphate detergents on your jewelry, then wash with mineral free water by either rubbing with fingers or using a soft cloth. Scrubbers or soft tooth brushes may be used for a deeper cleaning only if necessary, since they may scratch the surface and dull the jewelry’s luster.

There are also chemical cleaners available, but repeated use of liquid cleaners can result in discoloration overtime, therefore, such cleaners should only be used sparingly and only when other methods of cleaning fail.

When cleaning with any of the methods listed here, avoid directly cleaning any gemstones or you will dull the polish overtime.

To help you be a more informed consumer, and get the most out of your jewelry purchase, I would like to offer you these tips on how to ensure you are buying an authentic piece of silver jewelry.

Lobster Clasps

On Tiffany & Co silver link bracelets, the clasp is referred to as a lobster claw clasp because of its shape. This clasp is beefy and thick and along with other Tiffany & Co. clasps, it has .925 stamped on its base. On fake items, the clasp is cheap looking and made from thin, stamped metal.

Bracelet and Necklace Links

The sterling silver links on an authentic item are solid and soldered smooth. On fake items, the links are pinched together and have uneven gaps. Link bracelets and necklaces come in only one size and can only be sized by a Tiffany jeweler. If a seller offers you different sizes, you are probably buying a fake.

Sterling Silver Quality

All of the Tiffany & Co. silver jewelry is .925 sterling. It is solid, and not silver plate. Fake silver is plated with rhodium, is very shiny and lacks the luster of sterling silver. Also, many of the fake items have been manufactured with steel and therefore, will be magnetic.

Quantity Of Items Available & Price

Be very wary of a seller selling multiple identical items. This is a definite sign item is fake since authentic items are hand made and few in number. Also, if a seller states they received items from a wholesaler, they are lying to you. Tiffany & Co. does not distribute their items through wholesalers. Tiffany & Co, never has sales.

If there is a Buy-It-Now price on the item, as a general rule, be wary of any item priced less than one third of the retail price. In regards to auctions, it is very common for authentic items to be sold at starting prices of $1.00.

Communicating with Seller

Do not be afraid to ask the seller questions about the item for sale. If seller does not respond, or seems evasive, find another seller. Also, avoid a seller who has chosen to hide their feedback since you can find out a lot by reading feedback from other buyers.

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you take your time and do your homework, you will ensure your purchase decision is a wise choice. Now go out there and start shopping!!!
